During the summer holidays, people often take the opportunity to reflect on how their life, career, relationships are doing. Work itself slows a little while our places of work absorb the ebb and flow of colleagues and client’s absences.
The slowing of pace gives people time and in the case of holidays, distance, from the intensity of life. Which creates the ideal opportunity to create change whether it be small or considerable.
I work with a lot of menopausal women who decide to take control of their symptoms, careers and/or relationships, after experiencing a tipping point at this time.
Often the first step is to gain control of the impact of our menopause. This includes the action necessary to manage our symptoms and our own response to them. Once this is underway and we are starting to feel as though we are in the driving seat once more, we can focus on our career.
The quieter work environment gives us the opportunity to think through, research and plan our next steps:
• What we want to achieve.
• How we can get there.
• Whether we need to be part of specific mentoring, sponsorship or training programmes.
• How do we access those programmes?
• Whose support do we need to achieve either the goal or the interim steps?
Of course, for those organisations who value their ambitious employees at this stage in their life, it is a great time to communicate both what’s available and how to achieve goals. That communication supports the process of change, delivering information and potential opportunities.
• Where your menopause policy or guidelines are.
• Available medical and wellbeing support.
• Pathways to mentoring and training programmes.
• Internal networks and informal groups for employees.
It is too simplistic to assume that summer is a quieter period. For many it is a time to reset and create the foundation for personal change.
